This module of EL (our literacy curriculum) is focused on overcoming challenges. We have read, Waiting for the Biblioburro about a remote village in Columbia where children don't have a teacher and wait on a donkey driven library to bring books. The little girl, Ana, starts writing her own books and Luis the librarian takes them to other villages for other children to read. Another book we read was Rain School. This story takes place in a poor village in Chad. The students have to build their own school from the mud. They go to school until the rainy season begins. This week we read Nasreen's Secret School. We tried to imagine what it must be like to be a girl in Afghanistan. It seems like such a foreign concept: girls aren't allowed to go to school, or even be out of their house without a male relative.
We are going to continue to work with the topic of overcoming learning challenges and begin to identify any challenges we have. Please talk with your child about our reading and their own learning as we progress through this module.
I have added a few links to the webpage. Feel free to ask any questions you have. I'm always available on DOJO.
